The essential soft skills of equity and inclusion

The Brookings Institution recently released a series of videos featuring scholars discussing “Big Ideas to Redesign K-12 for the Automation Age.” Many of them are worth a look, but I found one in particular relevant to the work we are doing at the Untapped Potential Project.

Educators and employers alike talk a lot about how ‘soft skills’ are as essential to a successful career as harder, more technical skills. Soft skills usually refer to basic abilities like collegiality, ability to work in diverse groups, being punctual, following through on tasks, etc.

In the video from Brookings embedded below, Duke University computer science professor Nicki Washington discusses how equity and inclusion training should be included among the soft skills students need to acquire before graduating from high school. I hadn’t heard this topic discussed in exactly this way before. It’s worth four minutes of your time.
